France: Local cargo rail operators saw activity grow 70% in 2016
L'Antenne, 24 Nov 2017, online:-
While the number of tonne kilometres transported by rail in France dropped 4.9% in 2016 to 32.6 billion, local rail operators saw activity grow 70%. Local rail operators transported 9 million tonnes in 2016, representing 10% of total rail tonnage, and 5.5% of tonne km. The number one company in France is Eurorail and Railroad Development Corporation subsidiary Régiorail, which is present in half of the eight territorial local rail operators, and two of the four port operators. EUR 106mn (USD 126.65mn) have been invested in the renovation of national rails and service lanes, with EUR 50mn planned for 2018. Over the next five years, renovation efforts will allow for the continued use of 900 km of rails and 5 million tonnes of traffic, a 50% increase in lines and 25% in tonnage. However, an estimated 12,000 service lanes are still in need of renovation.
