Netherlands: Companies and government are to cooperate on truck platooning
Het Financieele Dagblad, 03 Dec 2017, Online:-
The Dutch government and over 20 businesses in the transport sector plan to use large-scale truck platooning to see some 100 automated truck convoys travel across the A15 motorway from the Port of Rotterdam to the hinterland with effect from 2020. So far only small-scale truck platooning pilots have been operated with between three and five trucks per convoy. By driving in convoy with short distances between the trucks the fuel consumption can be decreased by some 10% while safety is increased and longer journeys can be made as several drivers can drive in shifts. However, the use of large-scale truck platoons will require legislation changes. Among the parties involved are SmartPort, Ahold, Jumbo, Simon Loos, Peter Appel, DAF, Scania, Volvo and MAN
