Belgium: Antwerp port authority optimising inland water vessels handling
Deutsche Verkehrs-Zeitung, 10 Nov 2017, Online:-
The Antwerp port authority has produced an action plan to optimise the handling of inland water vessels. This includes total digitalisation which will mean setting up a data exchange platform to which all parties have direct access. This will mean that the necessary real time information is easily available. The plan also includes closer co-operation in planning for more efficient loading and unloading. The Barge Traffic System (BTS) is already available to enable this. Besides BTS, the port authority is working on central planning, with a central unit creating the plans for all container terminals in the port. The plan also includes the intention to combine cargoes. Often the vessels only have small volumes; having different cargoes sharing the same vessel will be more efficient. It is also intended to recruit more staff and to give workers additional training. There will be work on more projects in the coming weeks and at the end of January 2018, there will be a meeting of all the affected CEOs under the leadership of the port authority.
