Germany: Parcel delivery firms limiting Christmas delivery guarantees
Die Welt, 28 Nov 2017, online:-
In the weeks before Christmas, more than 15mn parcels are expected to be delivered in Germany on peak days. As a result of the expected chaos, companies have agreed with their online shipper customers to deliver a fixed and limited quantity of goods shipments during the period. Parcel service companies only want to guarantee what they can manage, whilst maintaining their standards, according to their own assessment of the situation. This means that, for the first time during the Christmas period, online shoppers may not get all of their packages delivered to their home. Consumer advocates have advised people to do their shopping in advance as a result. The parcel service providers DHL, Hermes, GLS and DPD will add more than 20,000 seasonal employees during the period. However, this is not expected to be enough, because during the Christmas period the volume of parcels is, on average, 50% higher than during the rest of the year.
