Austria: Record number of rail passengers in 2016

In 2016 Austria's railway companies transported a record of 288.8mn passengers, as reported by Schienen Control. This was 2.3% more than in 2015. On average every Austrian travelled 1,439 kilometres per train in 2016, which made them the keenest train users in the EU. The cargo volume also increased, at a rate of 1.9% to 114.9mn tonnes. The state railway company ÖBB saw the number of passengers rise by 2.6% to 244.1mn, while its rivals saw a 0.7% rise to 44.7mn.
