China/Slovakia: Belt and Road project would involve building wide-gauge rail

As part of a long-term plan to restore business exchanges between China and Europe, China plans to heavily invest with billions of euros [EUR 1bn (USD 1.13bn)] in the resurrection of the legendary trade route between Asia, Near East and Europe, known as the Silk Road. China's project Belt and Road is part of the Silk Road strategy, involving building of three-part infrastructure. In case of Slovakia, it has been considered that the continuation of the wide-gauge railway from Kosice to Vienna in Austria would be built. This would, however, pose serious issues with land appropriation on the Slovak side, according to the Slovak economist Peter Balaz. Despite the issue, the joint venture of Austrian, Ukrainian, Slovak and Russian railways, Breitspur Plannunggesselschaft, has commissioned a feasibility study for the project.
