France: The 1st autonomous TGV in 2022-2023
Le Monde, 15 Jun 2017, online:-
The SNCF could circulate its first 100% autonomous TGV in 2022-2023. Meanwhile, an initial test of a remotely conducted freight train will take place in 2019. Matthieu Chabanel, Associate Managing Director of SNCF Réseau, also indicates that freight train manoeuvres and TERs to and from maintenance centres could be partially automated in 2021. These operations will also take place on closed circuits. TGVS circulate on devoted track with homogenous material, which should facilitate semi-automatic circulation. The SNCF is eventually targeting autonomous trains with personnel on board to close doors and deal with eventual issues. Finally, the extension of the RER E, which should launch in 2022, will be semi-autonomous between Nanterre and Rosa-Parks. It will be the first system authorised to operate autonomously on the French rail network, according to Alain Krakovitch, Managing Director of SNCF Transilien.
