Approximately 350 of these companies actively carried out rail transport services, which corresponds to a new record. There were 163 rail companies that operated rail freight transport. The total turnover of German rail companies increased by over 1% to EUR 19.20bn (USD 21.57bn), while the turnover of rail freight companies grew by 4% to EUR 5.2bn. The total amount of freight transported rose by 5.7% to 408mn tonnes, while the total transport capacity went up by 5.22% to 121bn tkm. The total share of freight transportation on the rail network was at 18.1% compared to a share of 73.4% of freight transported on the road network. The market share of rail activity from rail companies that are not owned by the German state, or companies that are not part of German rail company Deutsche Bahn, increased by three percentage points to 41%, therefore leaving Deutsche Bahn with a market share of 59%.
