Sweden: Companies look for alternatives to the Port of Gothenburg
Göteborgs Posten, 10 Jun 2017, online:-
In Sweden, bearings manufacturer SKF and fashion retailer Lindex have announced that they will look for alternatives to the Port of Gothenburg. This stems from the ongoing conflict between port operator APM Terminals and the Swedish Dockworkers Union (Hamnarbetarförbundet). Theo Kjellberg, press manager at SKF, states that the company has already rerouted the majority if the goods via truck deliveries instead, and that the goal is to expand this to cover all of the company's export. Meanwhile, Maria Fransson, head of transport at Lindex, states that the company is considering ports on the continental side of Europe, and that Lindex has already moved parts of its Gothenburg operations to ports in Varberg and Malmö. Another company which looks at alternatives is chemicals and paint manufacturer Akzo Nobel, where Nordic Director Lars Andersson finds it absurd that the largest port in the Nordic countries cannot serve to strengthen Swedish competitiveness.
