Sweden: EU approved semi-trailers more prone to accidents

Chief Technology Officer Johan Granlund at Swedish technical consultant company WSP, together with logistics consultant Per Thomson, have published an essay with animations proving that the 16.5 metre EU approved semi-trailers are more prone to accidents than the longer vehicle combinations normal in Sweden. Similar results were achieved in a study conducted at the Chalmers University of Technology in 2014. The animations showed that tractor units have poorer possibilities to avoid a so called jack-knifing or skids since only two axles and a short wheelbase placed the centre of gravity far back. Norwegian statistics differentiated between types of vehicle combinations and showed that the shorter EU trucks were more often getting stuck in ascending slopes.
