Sweden: Governmental action against haulage issues
Svenska Dagbladet, 15 Dec 2016, online:-
Swedish Minister for Infrastructure Anna Johansson states that the Swedish government plans to take action against the issues in the Swedish haulage industry. She says that the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) has been ordered to ensure that all companies who commission haulage services also conduct background checks, and that the government also wants companies to report employer contribution on a monthly basis to the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket). Furthermore, Johansson states that the police have already received increased authority to hand out on-road sanction fees to haulers which violate the regulations, which have already yielded positive results. She also comments on the so-called kilometre tax, stating that one of its purposes is to make foreign haulers contribute financially for using Swedish roads. While the industry has been opposed to the tax, Johansson believes that some players have welcomed it, and that it will ultimately boil down to how the tax is presented.
