UK: Amazon delivery drivers work long hours and get paid less than minimum wage
BBC News, 11 Nov 2016, Online:-
It has been claimed that delivery drivers working for the online retailer Amazon in the UK often work "illegal" hours and get paid less than the minimum wage. An undercover BBC reporter found that drivers working for agencies contracted by Amazon are expected to deliver up to 200 parcels every day. Some told him that they are not permitted to take toilet breaks and some admitted to breaking the speed limit in order to hit their targets. The BBC reporter got a job at the Amazon contractor AHC Services. He was paid GBP 110 (EUR 129.95 USD 145.96) per route each day but states that he had to work over 11 hours per day, which is illegal for delivery drivers. He also only received GBP 93.47 for three days work during his first week after certain deductions were made, which equated to him receiving GBP 2.59 per hour. Amazon insists that it is committed to making sure that drivers drive legally and safely. It also states that it is committed to ensuring that they are fairly compensated.
