US: 6.5% monthly rise in truck tonnage index posted for May 2017

A 6.5% month-on-month rise and 4.8% year-on-year surge to 144.1 in the advanced seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index for May 2017 has been reported by the American Trucking Association (ATA), marking the steepest annual gain since November 2016. The index grew from 135.3 in April 2017 to 144.1 in May 2017. There was an 8.8% year-on-year drop and a 1.5% month-on-month fall in the index for April 2017.
Tonnage jumped 2.5% for the full year 2016 and the index soared by 0.9% for the year-to-date. Truck tonnage picked up in May 2017, following three consecutive decreases totaling 2.6%. The not seasonally adjusted index increased by 8.5% from 134 to 145.3. A formerly recorded decline of 2.5% in the April 2017 index has been revised to a fall of 1.5%.
