US: Union Pacific agrees to railroad inspection and maintenance improvement

US-based Class I line haul freight railroad Union Pacific has agreed to improvements in inspections and maintenance of the railroad after oil train derailment in Oregon that led to a massive fire prompting evacuation of areas in the vicinity. An investigation into the derailment found over 800 potential safety violations on the network. The agreement with the Federal Railroad Administration includes safety measures that will be applicable to all tracks used for hauling of oil and hazardous liquids, explosives, passengers, poisonous gases and radioactive materials. It includes walking inspection of tracks every 120 days. The inspections have to take place every 30 days in the Mosier area of the network. The enforcement actions pertaining to the Oregon derailment have not been finalised and further violations-related details were not available. The investigation is still going on.
