Ireland: 2016 road transported goods peak at 141.7mn tonnes

In 2016, the sum of goods that were transported by road in Ireland amounted ato141.7mn tonnes, 50% below the highest value recorded in 2007 and before the financial crash, which stood at 299.3mn tonnes. It is also the most recorded in eight years as indicated by the Central Statistics Office as in 2009, 148.3mn tonnes were posted. The record for 2016 shows that there is 13% more numbers of goods vehicles than in 2009 and 17.6% higher transportations of heavy goods. The tonnage growth between 2015 and 2016 was significantly driven by construction materials while a fifth of the fleet nationwide, vehicles over 10-tonne transported 87% of the weight and drove 88% of the kilometers. Additionally, for total road freight, 87% is made up of vehicles used for rewards or hire with 8.9bn tonne-km in 2016, where it journeyed 928km and hauled 92.6mn tonnes.
