Sweden: Sweden should prepare for driverless vehicles
Dagens Nyheter, 10 Oct 2016, p.6:-
Jonas Bjelfvenstam, appointed governmental investigator and director-general of the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (Statens väg- och transportforskningsinstitut, VTI), writes in an opinion piece that Sweden needs to coordinate its efforts if the country is to remain a front leader with regard to automatised vehicles. Sweden has to act now instead of later in order to prepare for driverless vehicles on Swedish roads, where it will otherwise run the risk of losing its position due to increasing international competition. Several automakers aim towards a launch of driverless vehicles as soon as 2020, where buses, trucks and heavy equipment could arrive much sooner. It would therefore be wise if Sweden improved its digital infrastructure, accommodated development of driverless vehicles as well as opened up for discussions with regard to how cities would be affected by a more autonomous vehicle fleet.
