On 27 July 2017, the European Commission said that the fiscal advantages enjoyed by Belgian and French ports violate the European rules on state aid and competition. From January 2018, port facilities in Belgium will have to pay corporate taxes. They will not have to pay back past subsidies. The fiscal advantages in France and Belgium are intended to promote exports.
