Germany: Cargo volume up 1.1% in 2016

According to preliminary figures by the federal statistics office, Destatis, 4.6bn tonnes of cargo were transported in Germany in 2016. This was 1.1% more than a year earlier. An external estimate on behalf of the Government suggests that the road cargo volume grew by 1.5% to 3.6bn tonnes. The rail-cargo volume, on the other hand, decreased by 1.6% to 361mn tonnes. Inland cargo ships saw a drop of 0.8% or 220mn tonnes. The marine shipping volume was up by 0.3% to 293mn tonnes, and the air freight volume by 3.3% to 4.5mn tonnes.
