Germany: Logistics companies expect wide use of digital processes in the future
Die Deutsche Verkehrszeitung, 29 Mar 2017, online:-
According a study by the German digital association Bitkom, three quarters of 508 German logistics companies surveyed expect that data glasses will be widely used to support employees, particularly to supply overlaid information. Some 65% believe that self-learning systems will carry out logistic activities, such as initiating order processes and planning the best routes. The use of autonomous drones to handle stock is envisioned by 58% in the sector, while 57% of companies also expect that goods will be transported with autonomous vehicles. A further 42% believe that goods will be directly sent to customers by delivery robots and drones. The survey also found that the topic of digitalisation is only the second largest challenge for the logistics sector behind energy and fuel prices, but digitalisation investment costs are viewed as a much lower challenge for logistics companies. Bernhard Rohleder, the head of Bitkom, added that the German logistics sector is to undergo a large revolution towards artificial intelligence and autonomous systems.
