Germany: Railway firms invest in digital upgrades of undercarriages and points
Handelsblatt, 19 Apr 2017, online:-
German railway operators like Deutsche Bahn (DB) are increasingly investing in the digital connection of trains' undercarriages, in a bid to avoid delays and cancelled services. Deutsche Bahn has said that until 2020 it wants to give digital upgrades to about half of its 60,000 points. This will see the use of smart sensors and special software. The plans have created a huge market, both for big players like point manufacturer voestalpine from Austria and startups like Konux from Germany. According to the author of an article in Handelsblatt, demand is so high that there is unlikely to be cut-throat competition.
