Sweden: Approval for expansion of Port of Luleå
Sjöfarts Tidningen, 18 Apr 2017, online:-
In Sweden, the land and environmental court has granted approval for the planned dredging and expansion of the Port of Luleå as planned within the framework of the Malmporten project. This means that the Swedish Maritime Administration (Sjöfartsverket) and port operator Luleå Hamn will be allowed to dredge and expand the port and establish new deep harbour Skvampen. It will have a capacity to receive vessels with a loading capacity of up to 160,000 tonnes in summer. This is an increase from the current limit of 55,000 tonnes. Plans also include a new railway connection to the port. The Malmporten project aims at increasing the transport capacity for iron ore from mines in the north of Sweden and Finland. Total costs are expected to exceed SEK 3bn (EUR 312.75mn USD 331.91mn).
