Webinar: Plan B – From Logistics to Insurance
Geopolitical Risks and the Middle Corridor Route

As the global operating environment becomes increasingly tense, the reliability of logistics has emerged as a critical competitive factor. Recent geopolitical crises – such as tensions in the Iran region – have a direct impact on international transport routes, schedules, and costs. Service providers are forced to make rapid decisions and find alternative solutions, often with very short notice.

Building on this, the webinar will give an overview of the current situation in ocean and air freight, as well as rail freight via Russia. Rail transport through Russia remains to be used, even though it is currently not insurable. From a geopolitical risk perspective, ocean freight is expected to face further slowdowns—transit times to Finland have already exceeded 60 days. Shipping lines have reduced vessel speeds due to rising fuel costs, and most carriers are currently routing via Africa. Looking ahead, stronger Atlantic storms are anticipated next winter as El Niño conditions develop, adding further uncertainty. At the same time, European buyers and importers have demonstrated highly synchronized purchasing patterns, with the peak season shifting earlier this year. In January alone, a record 1.3 million TEU was shipped from China to Europe, with cargo arriving almost simultaneously, compounded by winter storms and port strikes—creating disruptions nearly comparable to those seen during the COVID period.

This webinar takes a practical approach to how logistics risk management can be developed to respond to rapidly changing situations. Special focus is given to the so-called Middle Corridor route as an alternative to traditional transport corridors.

Topics covered in the webinar includes:

  • How current geopolitical crises (e.g. the situation in the Middle East) affects global supply chains
  • What concrete alternative transport routes are available to companies in crisis situations and why these should be implement in early stages
  • What the Middle Corridor means in practice: its structure, benefits, and limitations
  • How companies can anticipate disruptions and prepare for route changes in advance
  • What is required to quickly adjust transport routes without causing significant business disruptions

The expert speakers for the webinar are logistics professionals based in Hong Kong.
