Germany: Turnover at inland ports stagnating
Stuttgarter Zeitung, 06 Oct 2016, Online:-
Germany has around 100 inland ports which have a handling volume of 160mn tonnes of goods per year. Bundesverbandes Öffentlicher Binnenhäfen (BÖB), an association of companies concerned with inland ports, says that many members operate their own rail transport companies and see themselves as part of logistic chains in the country. However, whilst truck transport has been growing, turnover at inland port has been stagnating. Moreover, residential buildings are coming closer to harbour areas and people will complain against the noise emissions. However, inland ports in Germany are important interfaces for environmentally friendly transport.
