Netherlands: Shipping sector sees losses due to Grave collision
de volkskrant, 09 Jan 2017, Online:-
The disruptions at the lock at Grave that was damaged in a collision with a vessel lead to costs for the shipping companies. Inland shipping companies do no always have the correct insurances in place and consequently have to pay for the damages themselves. This mainly affects smaller shipping companies which can only claim back costs if the Dutch government board for infrastructure Rijkswaterstaat can be held responsible for the accident. The collision took place in thick fog at the end of 2016 and as a result of the collision the lock is only partially in use. It is thought that the damage is some EUR 300,000 (USD 336,959.39) per day excluding the damage to the lock and the missed income of shipping companies that cannot transport their goods. It is expected that between EUR 900,000 and EUR 2.8mn will be paid by the insurance company of the vessel involved in the collision, the remaining costs are for the insurance providers of affected parties.
