Slovakia: Government analysts recommend closure of little used railways
Teraz, 07 Oct 2016, online:-
Slovak governmental analysts have stated in their report Value for Money that more than 300 km of little used railways in Slovakia should be reviewed and considered for closure. Over 234 km are used for rail cargo, with only an average of one train per two days frequency in 2015. According to the analysts, the railway management company ZSR could potentially save EUR 6mn (USD 6.74mn) in running costs a year with one-off cost for the tracks demolition estimated at a maximum of EUR 70mn. Some 91 km of rail tracks are used for passenger transport, however, very little. The report advises a detailed analysis of their possible closure on public transport. The potential annual cost savings could reach EUR 2.6mn , with one-off demolition cost of EUR 27.2mn.
