Sweden: Call for national maritime transport strategy
Svenska Dagbladet, 10 Jan 2017, online:-
Olaf Merk, maritime transport expert at the International Transport Forum in the OECD, argue in an opinion piece that Sweden should establish a national transport strategy. Merk refers to OECD report "Promoting and Wellbeing in Sweden" and concludes that Sweden has a strong infrastructure for efficient freight transports. Meanwhile, the report states that Sweden is in need of upgrading its maritime transport infrastructure in order to accommodate for mega container vessels. Merk believes that Sweden should develop the Port of Gothenburg further as its main strategic port for trade. Increased capacity in this port is considered necessary in order for Sweden to remain competitive on a global level and secure trading links with other parts of the world.
