Sweden: Initiation of Mälarprojektet

The Swedish Maritime Administration (Sjöfartsverket) has announced that the seaway development project in lake Mälaren (Mälarprojektet) has been initiated. The locks in Södertälje will be expanded lengthwise and crosswise. When the work is completed, the seaway will be have a capacity for vessels up to 160 metres in length and 23 metres in width. The main objective is to increase the capacity for cargo transports in lake Mälaren. The project is expected to be completed by late 2019 and will cost about SEK 1.45bn (EUR 151.94mn USD 170.65mn). The ports in Västerås and Köping will upgraded to match the capacity increase.
