Sweden: Call for improving proposals of the European Commission
Svenska Dagbladet, 01 Jun 2017, online:-
In an opinion article in Svenska Dagbladet, the Chairman of the Swedish Transport Workers Union (Svenska Transportarbetareförbundet), Markus Pettersson, calls for the Swedish Government to improve the European Commission's proposals for the transport industry. The new regulations regarding domestic transport with foreign trucks, driving and rest time would result in an unreasonable working environment for the chauffeurs and have a negative impact on the national transport industry and sustainability goals. More than 300 transport companies have filed for bankruptcy since January 2016, while Eastern European companies distort competition with extremely low salaries. The regulations for domestic transport with foreign vehicles must become clearer, more purposeful and easier to control. Driving and rest times must ensure traffic security, thus driving three weeks with two days off should not be allowed. Functional controls are needed to ensure following of the regulations.
