Sweden: Declining market shares for APM in Port of Gothenburg
Dagens Industri, 28 Mar 2017, online:-
There is an ongoing decrease in freight volumes in the container terminal operated by APM Terminals in Port of Gothenburg which is mainly attributed to the unsolved conflict with the Swedish Dockworkers' Union (Hamnarbetarförbundet). According to APM Terminals, the company has lost customers due to extensive delays and disruptions. Annika Hilmersson, Head of Communications at APM Terminals, has announced that volumes have decreased by 20% in the first 13 weeks of 2017. This marks a continuation of the trend of declining market shares for the APM terminal. In 2016, the number of containers handled by APM decreased by 3% to a total of 798,000. Meanwhile, total freight volumes in the Port of Gothenburg increased to a record-high level in 2016. The company has given notice to about 30 employees about termination of employment as a consequence of reduced volumes. The outcome in the conflict remains uncertain, and the Swedish Dockworkers' Union has referred to the situation as being increasingly chaotic.
