Sweden: Work stoppage set to commence at the Port of Gothenburg
Dagens Nyheter, 24 Jan 2017, online:-
The Swedish Dockworkers Union (Svenska Hamnarbetarförbundet) will commence with its planned work stoppage at the Port of Gothenburg today at noon. The stoppage will go on for eight hours and involved about 200 dockworkers, meaning that the Port will see next to no activity during this time. Peter Annerback, sector head at the Union, states that the end goal is to reach an agreement with port operator APM Terminals, but that the problem is that conflict is the only instrument left when the employer does not wish to engage in dialogue. The conflict saw an upswing in late 2016, and according to Joakim Ärlund, CEO of Swedish trade association the Ports of Sweden (Sveriges Hamnar), APM Terminals' market share has declined by 7% due to lost clientele as a result of the conflict.
