Netherlands: Use of LNG for transport sector is to increase despite challenges
Het financieele Dagblad, 22 Nov 2016, Online:-
The use of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as a fuel is expected to increase for the shipping industry and the road transport sector because it has lower emissions than diesel fuel. However, only between 0.1% and 0.3% of inland shipping vessels, sea vessels and trucks use LNG and this is partly due to the incomplete infrastructure for LNG distribution. To improve this, an LNG loading quay is being developed at the Port of Rotterdam which requires an investment of between EUR 75mn (USD 84.24mn) and EUR 100mn from the tank storage company Vopak, gas company Gasunie and Gate. The development of LNG as a fuel for transport also saw difficulties from the economic crisis which strongly affected the shipping sector and led to lower investments and the low oil price also makes investments in LNG less profitable.
